How to wear a scarf

Fortunately scarf weather seems to have finally arrived in Georgia. In spite of owning six scarves, I always feel a bit self-conscious wearing them, and feel like I never do a good job of tying them. For a bit of inspiration, I looked to the men featured on The Sartorialist over the years, as there have certainly been a number of them wearing scarves. Here are some of my favorites:

Nice post Trip. Good timing for me to see them since I recently got my first scarf.

Most of these men are doing tragic, effeminate things with their scarves. It is almost certainly the case that you don't really need a scarf unless it's cold enough for an overcoat. Then, do only one of two things with it: either wrap it once around (top left, 3rd row left, 4th row right) letting the ends drape either both down your front or one in front and one in back, or hang it around your neck (a la bottom right) and then cross the ends over your chest and bunch it up around your neck so that your closed overcoat holds it in place. Of course, if it it's not quite cold enough to button the overcoat, you can always just drape it like the old fellow on the bottom right.

But this business of tying it up into all these weird knots like our Bohemian friends in the photographs is absurd: the sort of thing reserved for women, hippies, and and flamboyant homosexuals. If you want to wear something tied around your neck, get an ascot or a handkerchief (and watch a Humphrey Bogart movie).

That's not just aesthetic advice, it's the practical lesson I've learned as a Southerner living in the midwest where scarves are actually necessary.

Argh - they make it look so easy. My clime permits a scarf oh once every two years or so. I never get any practice.

also a transplanted southerner in the midwest here, and allow me to add that the "neck-tie" scarf knot is FAR warmer than just bunching up under an overcoat. Sorry anon. I try other knots, but keep going back to the tried and true. But then again I'm a "hippie" so what do I know anyway......
