Brooks Brothers doesn't get it

I got an email from Brooks Brothers this morning telling about their new luggage collection done in conjunction with Hartmann. They seemed pretty proud about how "timeless" it was. Here is one of their pieces:

Now compare with J. Crew's luggage done in conjunction with Globe-Trotter:

I think it is pretty clear which is more timeless. Now, the one from J. Crew does cost about three times as much as the Brooks one, but Brooks have never seemed to shy away from having some items, particularly luggage, with over the top prices. I don't know why they did this time around. Come on Brooks, let's try a little harder.

I like the Hartmann collection, made in USA. Have you seen the Spazzolato line at Brooks? I think it's nicer than anything J. Crew has. And, if you want something really great, in my opinion, you'd get the Chesterford & Cambridge bags at Swaine Adeney & Brigg.

The die hard sentamentalists don't want to admit it but the Brothers Brooks have jumped the shark on more ways than one.

The Brooks Brothers bag is awful. The JCrew bag is a bit fussy and I don't know that it would survive the rigors of airline travel, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy looking at it or being seen pulling it. So natty.
