LIFE Photo Archive: Quail hunt

I was fortunate enough to be able to quail hunting at my friend's parents' farm on New Years Day. In spite of the cold, it was still a lot of fun, and there were a good number of birds flying. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures, but you can imagine that they were similar to these photos I found on the LIFE Photo Archive, except without Dwight D. Eisenhower.

I think these photos totally capture the hunt. Except there's one of a dog with a quail in its mouth. Didn't see too much of that.

Nice shot of the "darkie" holding the horses and the dogs...really dates the photos...

I don't think anything captures the South more than the quail hunt. It truly represents a more genteel time. It is my favorite past time, but it's such a shame the quail hunts of our fathers generation involving a stroll out into the pasture for an afternoon are long gone. Today so much of it is reserved for plantations specifically kept up for such a purpose.

Cherish your opportunities to quail hunt. Also try Kevin's on for a store that supplies all things quail.
