Blog of Note: Tomboy Style

Do you like looking at pictures of beautiful women doing awesome things like shooting guns, fishing, skiing, driving fast cars, wearing tweed, and generally looking beautiful? Then Tomboy Style is the blog for you.

I don't know much about its author, Lizzie Garrett, but I know that she's got a good eye and runs a great blog. It's also awesome that she uses such large pictures. I'm adding it to my blog roll (on the right side of the screen), in case any still looks at it, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. Below are some highlights.

Prints for Sale by A Restless Transplant

If you read my blog with any regularity, I hope that you have taken the time to visit Foster Huntington's blog A Restless Transplant. Foster is a recent graduate of Colby College in Maine and is now living in New York City. He's a guy with an amazing eye for detail, and has the photography skills to match.

He recently announced on his blog that he is now offering any of his photos as prints, in either 8X10 or 11X14. If you've seen any of his photography, you know that this is awesome, as most of his stuff would look fantastic in a frame on the wall. The real problem, however, is deciding what to pick. With 287 album in his Flickr account, simply choosing an album is enough of a challenge, not to mention deciding which individual image (or images) to pick. A very small sample of some of my favorites can be seen below.

The image above is really one of my very favorites. It's currently my desktop background on both my home and work computers.

8X10 prints are $40 and 11X14 prints are $80. Contact Foster if you're interested. Also, be sure to check out his other website, Foster & Edge.

A Trip Down South street style

A couple of months ago, my friend Eric Holsomback, a graphic designer and photographer in Birmingham, mentioned that he was interested in getting into the "street style" photos. I was in Birmingham about a month ago for my brother's graduation, so I got in touch with Eric and we met up, along with our friend Sarah Margaret, and we took some photos. The photos came out pretty great, in spite of the model. Be sure to check them out, and also be sure to check out Eric's blog and some of his other photography.

A few notes:
1. My look was somewhat inspired by the guys at Sid Mashburn. The execution was nowhere near as good.
2. The tie should have been a bit longer
3. The jeans have since been hemmed
4. Posing for such pictures is much more awkward and narcissistic-feeling than it looks

LIFE Photo Archive: Quail hunt

I was fortunate enough to be able to quail hunting at my friend's parents' farm on New Years Day. In spite of the cold, it was still a lot of fun, and there were a good number of birds flying. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures, but you can imagine that they were similar to these photos I found on the LIFE Photo Archive, except without Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Pictures of O'Connell's

As a sort of a follow-up to Lawrence's post the other day about O'Connell's in Buffalo, here are some photos that I took of the inside of the store when I paid a visit (made a pilgrimage?) three years ago. Even these pictures don't completely capture the sheer volume of stuff available there. Really quite staggering. Plus there is an upstairs.

There are approximately 48,000 sweaters in this picture. Note the college mufflers near the ceiling.

Note the wall of ties and sweaters crammed in above the suits

Need a suit?

Need some pants?

Sorry this picture is fuzzy, but please note the stacks of Alden boxes on the back right wall

That is a wall full of shetland sweaters behind those coats

The 'Hooch

I stopped and took this picture of Georgia's most famous river on my way home from work a couple of weeks ago. It happened to be one of the few days in the past several months where it actually wasn't raining.

While walking over to the river, I took this shot in honor of Foster.

Blog of Note: My Parents Were Awesome

The website My Parents Were Awesome is great for so many reasons. It's like The Sartorialist meets SEXY PEOPLE meets the LIFE Magazine Photo Archive meets your family reunion. Enjoy some recent highlights.

Lake Keowee

Saturday before last was a beautiful day so I drove up to Lake Keowee (which is only about 15 minutes from Clemson) and took these photos from the top of one of the dams. Fortunately there were sailboats out on the lake to add to the scenery.

Sorry about the stray hair or whatever it is that appears to have been on the camera lens.

"Photography" or "A Trip Up North"

I certainly would not consider myself a photographer. In fact, as far as photography goes, it is barely a hobby for me. I think I got past that phase in college. Back then, I bought a Canon SLR camera because the girl I was dating at the time had one and I figured I could pretty much be a pro if I had a camera like that. Well, once the cost of film and developing pictures started to add up, and once I realized that it was annoying and inconvenient to tote around an SLR, the camera pretty much ended up in a drawer.

I bought a digital camera a few months back because I liked the idea of being able to put more pictures of mine and my friends' exploits up on Facebook. I bought the smallest, cheapest, but best reviewed camera I could find on CNET (I got the Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH, for those who are curious), and have enjoyed it so far. It is small enough to fit in my pocket to take the bar, and I feel like I can take pretty decent landscape-type pictures with it, though for the best results, they require a little doctoring in Picasa and GIMPShop (basically a free version of Photoshop since I can't really justify shelling out a couple of hundred dollars for the real thing). I should point out that Picasa is really a great piece of freeware that is excellent for organizing and viewing photos, as well as making easy adjustments to colors and lighting. In fact, it has a "I'm Feeling Lucky" button which will automatically make enhancements to a photo by itself, and 9/10 times really comes out with great results.

All of this to say, two things. First, if you haven't already, please take a look at the Flickr albums of a couple of acquaintances of mine which are located on the right side of the screen. They really are some of my favorite amateur photographers. Second, I have fooled around on GIMPShop to sort of create my own photos like Philip's (the album on top). Philip does a great job of editing his digital photos to make them have that vintage look, which, for some reason, evoke a really strong emotional response with me. After he told me how he did it, I sort of "borrowed" his technique and did a few photos of my own, which I have shared below (though I can't say that they are anywhere near as good as Philip's).

Summer in Charleston

After four months of rejection from 31 companies, I finally nailed down an internship for the summer. Obviously this is a bad time to be trying to find a job in the real estate development sector, but I never imagined that it would be as bad as it was. I will be down Charleston (Mt. Pleasant, technically) working for a company called Avtex Commercial. It should be fun and I'm looking forward to getting down there this week.

Here are some photos from around the Charleston area that I took when we were down there for a class trip back in May. Hope you enjoy.
